Balmain is a French line founded in 1945, by Pierre Balmain. Balmain’s elegant, super-feminine looks were favorites among European royalty and Hollywood fashion icons; Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, and Sophia Loren were all devoted fans. After Balmain’s passing in 1982, his assistant, Erik Mortensen, took over until 1990. Two years later, Oscar de la Renta joined the house and designed Balmain couture from until 2002. In 2005, designer Christophe Decarnin was brought on to the team and expanded Balmain’s signature evening attire to include everyday wear with a tough-chic, body-skimming aesthetic. Since Decarnin’s appointment, owner Alain Hivelin reported that sales have doubled. The company continues to grow as the staff expands; a shoe line with Giuseppe Zanotti began, and the label's first menswear collection was launched in 2009.
