Sonia Rykiel is a fashion line founded by Sonia Rykiel. The line is known for its quirky, deconstructed garb that began when she started sewing stylish maternity wear for her pregnant self in the early sixties. In 1967, she was crowned "Queen of Knits" by the Americans and by 1968, Rykiel had opened her own boutique. From there, she proceeded to invert seams, de-line looks, and add other non-precious, fun effects to her clothes. She later became the first designer to put seams on the outside of a garment, and to print words on her sweaters. Today, her label encompasses lingerie, accessories, children’s clothing, menswear, and beauty, and is still a family-owned business. There are currently three Sonia Rykiel boutiques in the U.S., located in Boston, New York and Guam.
