Hearst Communications, Inc. is a privately-held American media conglomerate based in New York City founded by William Randolph Hearst, son of self-made millionare George Hearst. At a young age William began as a newspaper mogul and publisher and by 1920 had a nation-wide string of close to 30 newspapers. It was also at this time that Hearst diversified his publishing interests into book publishing and magazines; several which still exist to this day. Hearst is one of the largest diversified communications companies in the world including 15 daily and 49 weekly newspapers as well as interests in an additional 43 daily and 72 non-daily newspapers owned by the subsidiary MediaNews Group. Additionally, they publish over 200 magazines nationally, including Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire and Town & Country. Hearst not only contributes to literary texts but is also active in other forms of media including television production, business publishing, internet businesses, newspaper features distribution, and real estate.
