Brand
Jil Sander, the renowned German minimalist designer, created her signature line in 1973. Sander's trademark look is a contemporary and somewhat austere style which consists of precisely cut pantsuits, slim blouses and form-fitting coats. She uses luxurious fabrics in plain grey, beige, blue, black or white. Sander's line saw success because her simple pieces could be so easily paired with anything; her single-minded focus on understated elegance, high-end materials and refined tailoring became her staple aesthetics. The austere suits and coats, embellishment-free cashmere knits, and monochrome silk dresses in whites, browns, and blacks earned a cult following among critics and buyers alike, and led to a multi-million dollar empire that came to include menswear, accessories, and multiple perfumes. In 2005, Raf Simons was brought in as the new creative director. The designer has delivered, maintaining the label’s heritage and making it his own with appliquéd shorts, electric red, orange, and blue outerwear, and blousy, one-button coats. Sander's eponymous fashion label still exists today but has been carried on without her involvement since 2004. In early 2009, Sander, after years of absence from the world of fashion, announced the creation of her own fashion consultancy, and her employment by Uniqlo of Japan in which Sander oversees upcoming womenswear and menswear collections.
