Brand
Alexander McQueenis a fashion label known for its dramatic, gorgeously constructed pieces, combining elements of British tailoring with French couture. Signature looks include billowy dresses cut in hourglass silhouettes, frock coats paired with skinny pants, sharp, angular suiting, and dark romantic gowns covered in intricate embroidery and lace. As a child McQueen had always had a passion for fashion—he began making dresses for his three sisters at a young age. He then went on to receive his Masters in Fashion design to then create his own line. The Gucci Group acquired 51 percent of the label in 2000, where McQueen remained the creative director until his passing in 2010. In 2004, he designed his first menswear collection and was named British Menswear Designer of the Year by the British Fashion Council. The brand introduced fragrances in 2003 and 2005, and in January 2006, launched McQ, a more affordable, denim-based ready-to-wear line including menswear, womenswear, and accessories. Additionally, McQueen became the first designer to participate in MAC's newest promotion: cosmetic releases created by fashion designers. The collection, McQueen, was released in October of 2007 and reflected the looks used on the Fall/Winter McQueen runway. By the end of 2007, Alexander McQueen had flagship boutiques in New York, London, Los Angeles, Milan, and Las Vegas as well as franchised stores in Istanbul and Moscow.
