Chloé

Brand

Chloé is a French fashion house founded in 1952 by [[Gaby Aghion]]. She had a vision titled, “luxury prêt-à-porter” where her focus was on wearable yet beautiful daywear. Prior to that time and her vision, luxury fashion houses had only ever produced Haute Couture. It was then that Aghion decided to bravely reject the stiff rules of the 1950’s fashion and create the “ready-to-wear” style of her line. This idea grew with popularity among chic young women almost instantaneously. The couturiers quickly followed suit (the first being [[Givenchy]], with their 1956 Ready-to-Wear collection, 'Givenchy University' and today, designer ready-to-wear heavily outweighs couture. In 1956, the first collection was introduced at Le Café de Flore and shortly thereafter Gaby Aghion and her partner, [[Jacques Lenoir]] started hiring young talented designers, who would eventually makes names of their own: [[Christiana Bailly]], [[Michèle Rosier]], [[Maxime de la Falaise]], [[Graziella Fontana]], [[Tan Giudicelli]], [[Guy Paulin]] and [[Carlos Rodriguez]]. A decade later, [[Karl Lagerfeld]] became the main designer for the label as it became known for its bohemian and feminine details which icons at the time such as [[Grace Kelly]], [[Brigitte Bardot]] and [[Jackie O]] proudly wore. In 1971, the first Chloé boutique opened and in 1985 the company was acquired by the [[Richemont Group]]. Celebrities such as [[Kirsten Dunst]], [[Natalie Portman]], and [[Lou Doillon]] have also become loyal customers. Additionally, Chloé is known for launching the careers of young designers, including a 28-year-old Karl Lagerfeld in 1966 and a 26-year-old [[Stella McCartney]] in 1997. Today, the label is helmed by London native [[Hannah MacGibbon]], a former assistant to Phoebe Philo, the house’s seminal director from 2001 to 2006. Bags and shoes continue to rank among Chloé’s most coveted wares. In 2002 Chloé launched a line of bags, small leather goods and shoes. It was then that the Paddington bag became one of the line’s first 'it-bags'. In 2008 after a close collaboration with the brand for the launch of the fragrance, Hannah MacGibbon was named artistic director and introduced her first collection in March at the Spring-Summer 2009 runway.
