Donna Karan

Brand

Donna Karen is a fashion line created by Donna Karan which launched in 1984. After co-designing with Anne Klein for almost a decade, the designer decided it was time to come out with her own line. Based on a foundation of “Seven Easy Pieces,” Karan’s first collection included practical mix-and-match separates that accentuated a woman’s curves. Her name became synonymous with the New York look and created a trend-setting, all-black palette for ready-to-wear. Her company grew quickly and shortly thereafter went on to include menswear, children’s apparel, beauty, home, and accessories. Additionally, the line launched several fragrances which were greeted with much praise such as DKNY Women, DK Men, Black Cashmere, and more recently DNKY Be Delicious. In 1996, Donna Karan went public and the Donna Karan International company went on to include her secondary label, DKNY. DKNY was inspired by her daughter and is a lower-priced offshoot of her Collection line. In 2001, the company was bought by LVMH. Currently, Karan acts as chief creative director for the line. As Karan herself has said, “For me, designing is an expression of who I am as a woman, with all the complications, feelings and emotions."
