Annie Leibovitz was born on October 2, 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut. She took her first picture while her family was stationed , was stationed in the Philippines (her father was a United States Air Force lieutenant colonel). Leibovitz attended the San Francisco Art Institute where she studied painting. From 1970 to 1983, Leibovitz became a legend at Rolling Stone, shooting iconic image after image of every great artist known to music. In 1983, Leibovitz joined Vanity Fair where she became known for her provocative yet artistic portraits of celebrities. The second best cover from the past 40 years, also shot by Leibovitz, is of Demi Moore naked, holding her pregnant stomach. In 1991, Leibovitz had an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. She has a book based on her life as a photographer, Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer’s Life, 1990-2005, which includes many of her professional photographs as well as several personal photographs of her family, children and partner, Susan Sontag. Leibovitz has been made a Commandeur des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government and has also been made a living legend by the Library of Congress.
