Jack McCollough is one half of the design duo Proenza Schouler, along with Lazaro Hernandez. The two met in 1999 at Parson’s School of Design and famously did their thesis project together, which was bought by Julie Gilhart, the fashion director of Barneys New York. The label name comes from their mothers’ maiden names. McCollough grew up in New Jersey and attended the San Francisco Art Institute for glass blowing. His path later led him to Parson’s, however, where he also interned at Marc Jacobs. Senior year, McCollough and Hernandez both worked at United Bamboo and realized that their design aesthetics were the same. The edgy, youthful clothes of Proenza Schouler are known for their play with proportions and sleek silhouettes. Besides Barney’s, other stores quickly bought up collections of Proenza Schouler as well, whose designers were fresh from graduation. In February of 2003, they had their first runway show and also won the Perry Ellis Award for new talent from the CFDA. Their list of clientele include the hippest celebrities, from Chloë Sevigny to Kate Bosworth.
