Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, known as Coco Chanel, was born on August 19, 1883 in Loire Valley, France. In 1912, Chanel began her career in fashion at her millinery shop in France. Throughout the 20s, Chanel replaced the traditional corset with comfort and elegance with women’s trousers and dresses matched with costume jewelry and robust perfumes. In 1922, Chanel Fragrance introduced the perfume, Chanel No. 5, which became and continues to remain a profitable product for the company. Three years later, Chanel presented her signature cardigan jacket with a fitted and flattering skirt as well as the little black dress in 1926 that remains a staple in every woman’s closet generation to generation. In 1954, Chanel began to produce timeless couture, especially her handbags, pea jackets and bell-bottom pants for women.Today, Chanel’s collection has developed into watches, cosmetics, fragrance, eyewear, handbags and fine jewelry. After Chanel passed in 1971, Karl Lagerfeld became chief designer of Chanel’s fashion house.
