Designer Domenico Dolce was born in Polizzi Generosa, a small village near Palermo, Sicily. Dolce studied fashion design in Sicily, while working at his family’s small clothing factory. In 1980, Dolce met Stefano Gabbana where they worked as assistants together at an atelier in Milan. The pair began working as a team in 1982 as free-lance designers.In 1986, Dolce and Gabbana’s first collection received international acclaim and three years later they opened their first boutique in Japan. In 1990, they launched their premiere men’s collection and opened their first women’s boutique in Milan. Their line expanded in 1992 with scarves, beachwear, perfume, ties and accessories. In 1993, Dolce & Gabbana received the Wollmark Award as well as Best Fragrance of the Year. By the end of 1990s, Dolce & Gabbana’s annual sales were reported around $500 million. The brand Dolce & Gabbana is actually comprised of two central lines: Dolce & Gabbana and D&G. Dolce & Gabbana specializes in exclusive luxury items that are considered timeless such as eyewear, purses, ready-to-wear and high fashion. D&G is a more casual line with urban inspiration geared towards younger buyers.
