Helmut Lang, born March 10, 1956 in Vienna, Austria, is a designer known for his simplicity and elegance. Lang originally hoped to become a businessman but in 1977 he opened his first studio. In the mid 1980s, Lang celebrated his first ready-to-wear collection in Vienna. In 1986, Lang began showing women’s clothing in Paris and in 1987, a men’s collection followed. Today, Lang is considered to be a pace-make in the fashion industry. He has created designs that have inspired a new generation of designers such as Dries van Noten and Dirk Bikkembergs.In 1993, Lang was appointed to be a professor at the Vienna College for the Applied Arts. In 1995, Lang launched his underwear and shoe collections followed by jeans, accessories and protective eyewear lines in 1996 with efforts to expand his consumer base with ready-to-wear designs. That year, Lang received the CFDA Best International Designer of the Year followed by the VH1 Vogue Award for Best Menswear Designer of the Year in 1997. In 2000, he received his second CFDA award for Menswear Designer of the Year. In 2004, Lang was named Designer of the Year by GQ.
