Bio

Christy Turlington was born in Walnut Creek, California on January 2, 1969. She was discovered by a photographer in 1982 while horseback riding. Her first public appearance was in Duran Duran’s “Notorious” music video, which she is still remembered for today. It wasn’t until 1987, when she was photographed by Steven Meisel for the cover of Vogue Italia, that she began to get acknowledged. Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, infamously known as Trinity, is a title that A-list photographer Steven Meisel named the trio after the number of frequent times he’s booked them together. Turlington has been featured in an infinite list of magazine covers, editorial and campaigns. Since her first photo shoot for Vogue Italia, Turlington has been on the covers of Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Vogue British, W, Harper’s Bazaar, V, Marie Claire, Elle, Vanity Fair, Mademoiselle and Shape, to name a few. Aside from fashion and lifestyle magazines, Turlington was also featured in professional books for two of fashion’s most idolized icons such as Karl Lagerfeld’s “Off the Record” and Peter Lindbergh’s “10 Women.” In 1993, she was also labeled as The Face of the 20th Century when Ralph Rucci used her face on 120 mannequins that were created for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The start of her campaigns was in 1987, when she signed a cosmetic contract with Revlon. She has since been the face of some of fashion’s biggest names including Missoni, Calvin Klein, Valentino, Chanel, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Chloé, Escada and Yves Saint Laurent. With the many passions she carried, she left full-time modeling in 1994 to attend New York University to study religion and Eastern philosophy. An extremist when it came to yoga, Turlington wrote a book called “Living Yoga: Creating a Life Practice,” in addition to launching a skin-care collection and a yoga-inspired line of active apparel. With the countless times she has been honored and praised, Turlington is known to be one of the friendliest and most professional models of the fashion industry. She has rejected the “supermodel” label and widely respected for that among her peers and clients. Turlington is an anti-smoking activist; as an ex-smoker and having gone through the death of her father’s due to lung cancer, she created a website for others looking to quit smoking. She has also been named an ambassador for CARE, an organization dedicated to fighting global poverty. On behalf of CARE, she has also made brief visits to Africa to bring health-care practitioners together.
