Derek Lam is a designer who got his start in fashion as an assistant to Michael Kors. Lam stayed with the company, moving up to eventually become the Vice President of the Michael Kors brand. In 2003, Lam launched his signature label, and just two years later,  won the CFDA Perry Ellis Swarovski Award for New Designers. He expanded his line into shoes, jewelry, and eyewear. Since then, his label has sold successfully in high-end department stores, including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom, as well as in specialty stores throughout the world.  His line continues to receive acclaim; in 2007, he received the CFDA Accessory Fashion Designer of the Year.
