The playful and whimsical Frenchman Jean Paul Gaultier is one of the most respected designers in the industry today. With innovative, gender-bending, and expertly tailored outfits, Gaultier has created infamous wardrobes ranging from Madonna’s cone-shaped bra to David Beckham’s sarong. Gaultier’s career first started in 1970 when he worked as a design assistant at Pierre Cardin. He eventually moved on to work with Jean Patou, and then created his namesake label in 1976. The womenswear line was definitely unconventional; the designer was called an “enfant terrible”. Gaultier’s designs are most often inspired by traditional military, equestrian, and royal attire. He is also known for his skill of designing tuxes, trenches, and leather. In 1984, he created his first menswear collection under his label. Perhaps one of the most defining moments of his career, however, came in 1990, when he designed the cone-shaped bra for Madonna’s Blonde Ambition tour. In 1997, Gaultier finally started designing couture. His couture collections are always a hit, thanks to his whimsical style. Additionally, he started designing for Hermès’ womenswear division in 2004. Besides clothes, Gaultier has a successful fragrance line and was awarded the title of Chevalier by France. Never a bore, this outrageous and talented designer continues to impress everyone with his avant-garde, edgy pieces and is heralded by top stars like Marion Cotillard and Nicole Kidman.
