Fashion designer Jason Wu is perhaps most famous for designing the one-shouldered white silk, chiffon, and Swarovski-embelleshed gown that Michelle Obama wore to the inaugural ball. Prior to that, the Taiwanese-born designer was creating couture outfits for dolls. He switched to real women in 2006, when he created his eponymous line. The label Jason Wu is known for its classic silhouettes and incorporation of bold colors and prints without being over-the-top. Born on September 27, 1982, Wu created the “Fashion Royalty” doll collection in 2000 while living in Europe. These miniature models wear finely-detailed couture clothes designed by Wu and are sold at F.AO. Schwartz from $70 to $400. Wu also studied at Parsons School of Design before leaving to intern for Narciso Rodriguez. When Wu started his own line in 2006, he received funding from his family and his savings. Today, he is one of the hottest young designers. Heralded by Anna Wintour, Wu also won the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award in 2008 and was nominated for the Vogue Fashion Fund Award. His designs can often be seen on celebrities such as Leighton Meester, Tinsley Mortimer, and January Jones.
